CIRES (Centre for International Relations Studies) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia invited me to speak in its national seminar entitled “ASEAN Single Market 2015: Indonesian Corporations Strategy and Opportunities” on 31st May. I was invited to give my opinion about the ASEAN single market since I am the author of Think ASEAN! book which was launched in Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. As we know, the Head of Governance from all ASEAN countries plan to create an ASEAN community, which will lead to the creation of the ASEAN single market. This single market will become a great opportunity for companies (big, small, local, multinational, NGO, state-owned, etc) to expand their business as there are 500 million peoples over these countries. It is really a huge market. The question now is, how do we as Indonesian corporation face this competitive challenge?
In this session, I explored the content of my book. I analyzed the ASEAN market with business landscape analysis model. Three main drivers of change: digitalization, globalization, and futurization will give a significant impact to the ASEAN landscape, and will change customers and competitors. As I mentioned in my book, there are three ways to keep our competitiveness: become the local champion, learn from local companies that go regional, and learn from multinational companies that go regional. At the end, I said to the participants that we shouldn’t just enough to pursue to be a champion in local country. Instead, we must become regional champion.
The presentation was going very well. Either me or Mr. Andrew White (director of Sampoerna) as the other speaker was pleased and participants very enthusiasm following the whole session. They asked me a lot of questions regards of the ASEAN opportunities, especially for Indonesia opportunities. I told them that we, the Indonesian has a great opportunities due to greatest number of population, the biggest economic scale, and many other things that support us. With being ASEAN countries, the opportunity for Indonesian become more greater, as the creation of ASEAN single market in 2015
