John Lennon was shot dead at Central Park, Manhattan, New York City on Dec 8, 1980. The was the day when music die.
Twenty five years after his death, his name is not even forgotten. In fact it is becoming more popular from time to time. John Lennon is one example of what they called Iconic Brand.
Several years back, i stayed at Hilton Amsterdam. I saw an exhibition about his Cartoon works. Perhaps, not so many people know that Lennon wants to be a famous cartoonist. That's why he has a lot of cartoon works already.
During the event, I also saw a gun made from some melting bullets which symbolized an anti-violence kind of thing. And they also displayed the room (I can’t remember whether it was the exact room or just the prototype), where John Lennon and Yoko Ono did their infamous naked in bed while protesting Make Love no War! (featured also in one of Apple's Print-Ad / Think Different Campaign several years back)
One thing that made John Lennon as an iconic brand is that he represents the populist world that stand up against the mainstream national ideology of his time. In simple words of saying, he is simply rebellious type of person and the world usually amazed with such kind of human-being.
Well, not always of course. But the point is that an icon such as John Lennon usually represents the voice of that silent majority. During the 60s and 70s, he spoke vibrantly against his own government, the Queen gave him the title: Member of the British Empire (MBE) but he then rejected and returned it to Her Majesty for some reasons. During the cold war, he represented us all who were too sick with the killings, and imagine how the world could be living in peace, where there is no country, no hunger, no religion too…. the kind of anxiety and desire that all of us would dream of but just could not dare to speak it out loud. Well, perhaps we could speak it out, but didn’t think that it would be heard.
In marketing, you can make your brands become Icons…by doing what John Lennon did…. by representing the silent majority…. think about Harley Davidson and Body Shop to name a few….they both Iconic aren’t they?
Happy is the happiness, happy if not accompany phenomenon accompanied with labor, then it will not only quickly lose value, but also can quickly make people's hearts fall down.Do you think so?
